The Perfect Touch

OWT_600x315

With the PADI Open Water Diver Touch™, your student divers now have another cutting-edge knowledge development option in addition to the traditional manual with video or PADI Open Water Diver Online. So, how does the PADI Open Water Diver Touch differ and how can you integrate it into your PADI Open Water Diver courses?

The PADI Open Water Diver Touch is a highly interactive digital publication that includes the PADI Open Water Diver Manual text and exercises, website links and Open Water Diver Video content. Student divers take Knowledge Reviews online from within the app, which generates an eRecord, which is similar to one that PADI eLearning students receive. At this point, student divers come to you and complete the four Open Water Diver course quizzes and the final exam.

While the general process is the same as with other knowledge development options, here are some recommendations to consider when integrating the PADI Open Water Diver Touch into your courses:

Setting Up Your Students

  • If possible, have students redeem their Touch access code and download the PADI Library App at the time of purchase so you can guide them through the process. Have them sign into the PADI Library App so that they can see that the PADI Open Water Diver Touch and the mRDPML are available for download.
  • Get your own copy of the Touch and familiarize yourself with how it works. Navigation will be intuitive for many of your tablet-using customers but, those unfamiliar with interactive publications may need guidance.
  • Conduct a short orientation session using a demonstration tablet and show student divers how to use the Touch for independent study. Focus on “Getting the Most Out of The PADI Open Water Diver Course” in the Introduction, accessing Learning Objectives at the beginning topics and using the frequent exercises to verify understanding as they go.

Knowledge Reviews

  • Using one of the Knowledge Reviews as an example, tap the “Take the Knowledge Review” link and show students how to log into the Knowledge Review site using the same email address and password they used to register their Touch. Once on the site, show them how to select the correct Knowledge Review and how they are required to login in once more – this time with their password first and then email address. Go through one or two questions and show them how the system provides remediation when they answer a question incorrectly. Emphasize that it’s important that they read this information before answering the question again. The remediation also includes the name of the subsection in Touch where students can return to later to read the topic again.
  • Students have the opportunity to review the questions at the end of the Knowledge Review, just like any other knowledge development format. They can review any topics before moving on to the next section and, if they’re still not clear, bring them to your attention prior to taking the quiz for that section or the final exam.
  • The page students return to in the Touch after completing each Knowledge Review has important information. This page informs students that they’ll receive an email after completing each Knowledge Review and tells them how to access their Knowledge Review eRecord.

Stay tuned for the next installment that will cover eRecords, referrals and the mRDPML. For more information about using PADI Open Water Diver Touch, please refer to Second Quarter issues of The Undersea Journal and Training Bulletin.

What is the PADI Minidive of the revised Open Water Divers Course and how is it conducted?

7822435376_0a841b18d2_o

During confined-water training, students develop skills they will apply and demonstrate mastery of in open water. As PADI Instructors, we look for the student to complete skills in a reasonably comfortable, fluid, repeatable manner as would be expected of a diver at that certification level. The process begins with individual skills. However, while diving we apply multiple skills together, so over the training progression, students learn to integrate the new skills. The minidive lets students carry out the steps of a dive in the same manner they would as certified divers. It gives them the context of how everything fits together and provides the opportunity to repeat skills within the context of a simulated dive. This prepares students better for their open water training, particularly Open Water Dive Four. Although only required in Confined Water Dive Five, you may integrate minidives earlier in your confined water training – and it’s a good idea if logistics and time permit.

Minidives build student confidence by allowing skill practice in context, such as making an ascent at the end of a dive or disassembling gear after the minidive. From an instructor’s perspective, minidives help you evaluate how well students understand the contextual aspects of diving techniques, as opposed to simply having the ability to repeat skills when signalled. Minidives should be fun. Student divers learn better, learn faster, face challenges with more enthusiasm and become comfort-able with diving quickly if they enjoy what they’re doing. Simple ideas motivate divers; start by explaining that they are simulating an open water dive. Add as much realism as you can, such as using similar entries and exits to those used in the local area or that you’ll have them use during open water training. If you will be diving from a boat, mark off an area of the pool to simulate the stern or water entry area of the boat for students to work within. Little things like introducing underwater games during minidives or having someone (not involved in training) shoot video of them during the dive builds enthusiasm. To help students refine their skills in context, you can, for example, make certain zones represent a sensitive bottom they must avoid contacting by controlling buoyancy and maintaining awareness.

Simulating and practicing such aspects of open water dives helps students anticipate what it will be like when they get to open water. PADI’s Guide to Teaching gives you a solid overview on how to conduct the minidive — in particular it explains how the students team up to plan the dive themselves (a practice run prior to Open Water Dive Four), how to use the PADI Skill Practice and Dive Planning Slate, and how you will interact and supervise. The minidive provides a perfect opportunity to introduce an underwater attention getting signal. Students hear the signal, make visual contact with you and can respond to your directions underwater. Learning this in confined water offers you more control of your students in open water.

Picture1

Regarding time management, you may already use a skill circuit or other practice time during confined water training. In this case, you’ll see relatively little effect on your schedule. For those who don’t, you should only notice a minor increase in time because the minidive skills build on skills already mastered. For example, students have already demonstrated that they can swim without a mask, replace it and clear it before they would do so in the context of a minidive. Also, Confined Water Dive Five introduces relatively few new skills, affording more time for the minidive. Some PADI Members who conducted the course revision beta trials found that time spent during minidives is gained back in the open water, as students are more organized and prepared. If you need further information on the revised Open Water Diver Course, login to the PADI Pros Site and search under [Training Essentials, Curriculum, and Revised PADI Open Water Diver Course Information Page].

PADI Releases Open Water Diver Touch

PADI Open Water Touch

PADI introduces world’s most popular open water training system on tablets to connect more consumers with PADI Dive Centers and Resorts.

Continuing to lead the way in diver education and attract more divers to PADI Dive Centers and Resorts, the PADI organization has launched the next evolution in the PADI Open Water Diver experience: the revolutionary PADI Open Water Diver Touch. An industry first, the Touch fuses state-of-the-art technology with proven PADI instructional design to deliver the excitement and experience of learning to scuba dive to consumers’ iOS and Android* tablets.

The Touch is a tablet-based version of the PADI Open Water Diver program – the world’s most popular scuba diving certification course. It integrates the PADI Open Water Diver manual curriculum, learning objectives and video clips into a rich, interactive learning environment. Since the Touch is a tablet-based application, no internet connectivity is required to view course content, although users must be online to complete Knowledge Reviews. So, student divers can conveniently access the knowledge development portion of the course at any time from any location. This increased accessibility makes the PADI Open Water Diver Touch extremely appealing to the ever-growing market of tablet users.“As consumer behaviors change, thPADI OW Touche dive industry must change to meet their expectations,” says Drew Richardson, CEO and President of PADI Worldwide. “Globally, tablet sales accounted for 48 percent of all PC sales last year. And, the worldwide tablet market is forecasted to grow 47 percent in 2014. Mobile devices have had the most rapid acceptance of any technology in history and people expect to do everything — including learn to dive — with them. The new PADI Open Water Diver Touch lets PADI Members give consumers what they want, and in the process, get them into their local PADI Dive Center or Resort.”

To further grow the industry and drive even more consumers through PADI Members’ doors, the PADI organization has also launched the new PADI Digital Library app, currently available for Apple iPad at the iTunes App Store. Consumers downloading this free app receive complimentary access to the PADI Open Water Diver Touch Introduction, which includes a call-to-action encouraging them to contact their PADI Dive Center or Resort to enroll in a course. The PADI Digital Library app will soon be available from the Google Play Store for Android devices as well. Consumers can purchase the complete PADI Open Water Diver Touch from PADI Members.

Taking the Plunge – Open Water Diver Course Changes

PADI Open water Diver

Taking the Plunge – Open Water Diver Course Changes

The key consideration while revising the PADI Open Water Diver course was evolution rather than revolution. The course has a long standing, proven track record and didn’t require major renovation. Most of the course components remain reassuringly familiar, but, there are a few new skills that deserve a closer review. Continue reading “Taking the Plunge – Open Water Diver Course Changes”
