PADI Digital Core Courses Expand Reach

As part of PADI’s ongoing mission to expand independent study materials and enhance the PADI digital product suite, we’re expanding the number of language offerings for the PADI Open Water Diver, Freediver™, Advanced Open Water and Enriched Air Diver educational course materials. Making the PADI eLearning experience accessible to even more students across the globe.

Scuba diving is a sport/hobby/obsession that bridges borders and cultures, bringing people around the world together to enjoy the underwater environment. But people around the world have different needs and, more importantly, speak different languages.  PADI accounts for this when creating its eLearning products.

The PADI organization is making it easier for PADI Divers to access learning materials, with a digital suite of core courses that are easy to purchase, download and use. Now, these materials are offered in more languages than ever before too – further demonstrating that PADI truly is the way the world learns to dive.

What’s new?

  • PADI Open Water Diver – Open Water Diver now available in seven new languages: Czech, Croatian, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Russian and Turkish.
  • PADI Freediver – 11 additional languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Korean, with Thai and Russian soon to follow.
  • PADI Enriched Air Diver – 22 languages: English, Arabic, Danish, Dutch, French, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, with Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Indonesian, Thai, Hebrew and Polish soon to follow.
  • Advanced Open Water Diver – Nine new languages: English, German, French, Dutch, Spanish, Korean, Arabic, Traditional and Simplified Chinese.

Important to note:

  • The PADI Library app will reflect these changes. If divers have automatic updates turned on in their device settings, the app will update automatically.  If not, they will need to make sure they update their app.
  • PADI Dive Centers and Resorts, be sure to update your eLearning preferences in your account to reflect the courses and languages you support.
  • The affiliate links are now universal and are not specific for each course. After clicking on the affiliate link, the student view defaults to all courses and languages. For this reason, be sure to update eLearning preferences in your account and deselect the courses and languages you do not support.
  • There is now an eLearning completion alert email when student divers have finished their final exam (Open Water and Enriched Air eLearning) and have affiliated with you. All members automatically receive these alerts but you can turn them off in the eLearning preference center if you prefer.

New Digital Forms

Before conducting any PADI® course inwater activities, you must make sure student divers complete required administrative forms, such as PADI Release of Liability/Assumption of Risk/ Non-agency Acknowledgment Form – General Training or PADI Statement of Risk and Liability/Non-agency Acknowledgment Form – General Training, EU Version, the PADI Standard Safe Diving Practices Statement of Understanding and the PADI Medical Statement (RSTC Medical form). Now, you can get this “paperwork” done efficiently online and manage it all in the PADI Online Processing Center (OLPC).

When a customer signs up for a PADI course, the dive center/resort or instructor uses the OLPC to send a digital invitation to the student to set up an account to receive digital forms and/ or an eLearning code. The student then receives the appropriate forms package for the course. This initial connection is a two-step process.

Getting Forms to Students

Step 1: Log on to the PADI Pros’ Site and go to the OLPC. There you’ll see two versions:

  • OLPC 2.0, the current OLPC without the digital forms option. Use 2.0 while you get comfortable with OLPC 3.0, or for processing non-English speaking students until digital forms become available in other languages.
  • OLPC 3.0, which has the new digital forms packages. In OLPC 3.0, go to Assign Codes, choose the eLearning code you want and whether you want to send digital forms.

Step 2 There are currently forms packages for: Scuba Diver, Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, Specialty Diver, and Other Courses. If you select any of the first five, you finish Step 2 by simply clicking Send Forms and then Confirm. The digital forms packages are not available for all courses, yet, so if you selected Other Courses in Step 1, a drop-down menu appears with all other PADI courses. Choose the course you’re teaching, and Step 2 will default to select the No Forms option for you to Confirm – by selecting this option, the student must complete paper versions of the required forms.

Managing/Processing When Students Reply

To manage and process your students, log back on to OLPC 3.0. Under Process/View Your Students you’ll see several columns including:

First Name, Last Name, Course, Created Date, Forms, Action Date, and a column for Process or Manage.

Pay special attention to the Forms column. There, you will see a word or phrase, conveniently color coded, which describes what step of the process the student is in. Green means complete; orange and red require action.

If the student filled out all the information and digitally signed the required forms – in essence pre-populating the Positive Identification Certification (PIC) – with no need to have a physician sign the Medical Statement, you will see a green box with “Signed.” This indicates that the student is ready to be processed once all training is complete.

Here are a few other form status labels you may see, along with their meanings:

StatusLabel Meaning
WaiverThe PADI Pro sent an invitation for the student to use digital forms, then the PADI Pro changed it to use paper, not digital, forms.
No FormsThe PADI Pro opted to use paper instead of digital forms when sending the invitation.
Email SentDigital forms have been sent to the student, but no action yet taken by the student.
DeclinedThe student received the digital forms, but declined to sign them. The PADI Pro contacts the student to find out what happened, and can then opt to change to paper forms, or resend the digital forms to the student.
Clearance RequiredThe student has answered “yes” to one or more medical statement question and must be cleared to dive by a physician.

The Process option allows you to complete your student processing as usual with certification card processing. The Manage option provides several options depending on the student’s status including Update, Upload/Clear for Primary Medical, and even Re-send Email. If a dive center or resort has its own forms for certain activities, those can be scanned and uploaded using the option labeled Add/Delete Additional Documents.

Additional languages are being developed for release soon. Until other languages are added, Members using non-English forms will continue to use OLPC 2.0. Stay tuned for more updates on digital forms in OLPC 3.0 and for other features as they are added.

New PADI digital forms are convenient and time-saving. You continue to have a paper option using printed forms or those on the PADI Student Record File.

The New PADI Dive Shop Locator (Beta) is Live!

The updated PADI Dive Shop Locator is packed with new features that will make your business stand out.

Getting people to learn scuba diving (and continue on after they’re certified) is a team effort, and PADI® is always looking for ways to make Members’ businesses stand out and shine. The Dive Shop Locator (DSL) was created more than a decade ago so new divers could find dive training they could trust.

With the newly redesigned and repackaged PADI.com, it was time for the DSL to get a refresh. As the new PADI DSL Beta is unveiled, PADI Members will see a host of exciting features – all with the goal of making sure their business keeps growing. Here’s a quick FAQ of what you can expect from the new PADI Dive Shop Locator.

What are the key features to the new DSL?

Check out the value and sheer number of these new features of the PADI DSL Beta.

  • Better User Experience – The user journey matches what users expect from a location-based search experience from sites like Yelp, TripAdvisor, and Google Maps. This includes cleaner page layouts and information hierarchy, intuitive task flows and visual consistency.
  • Enhanced Map View – Adjustments to the way search looks at geography has improved the look and feel of the visual indicator dive shop flags to clearly indicate the type of dive center shown on the map (e.g. a PADI 5 Star).
  • Improved Filtering – New filters use more descriptive terminology and intuitive filter groupings.
  • Faster Loading Speed/Performance – The new PADI DSL is a quicker experience regardless of whether your area has high or low bandwidth.
  • More Detailed Dive Shop Pages – Each dive shop has a unique URL and page. This will allow the pages to be “deeplinked,” which helps marketing teams and members share the URL via email and on websites, and allows pages to be indexed by search engines like Google.
  • Better Mobile Experience – The new DSL is a fully mobile friendly and responsive experience.
  • Improved Search – Users will have the ability to search by almost any (reasonable) dive-related phrase to locate a dive shop or location.
  • More Clearly Delineated Ads – Sponsored ads are displayed within the search results list and map, making them more visible to end-users.
  • Filter by Freediving Centers– Individual dive shop pages and filter menu includes the ability to filter by freediving centers.
  • Visibility for PADI 5 Star – Search results show all shops but, list 5 Star Dive Centers and Resorts more prominently.

What is a “Beta” and how will this work?

The Dive Shop Locator is an important tool that divers find and connect with dive centers and resorts. To fully understand how any new design affects this process, the PADI team will make both the current and new design available to users and allow them to switch between each experience and leave feedback. For the next two to three months, the team will monitor interact with each, adjusting each design as needed and sharing the learnings.

How long will the DSL Beta run?

The DSL Beta will initially run for eight to 12 weeks, but will be flexible so that enough data can be collected to make the DSL the best it can be.

PADI eLearning Environment Update

In the effort to provide PADI Divers an elegant customer journey from point of purchase to product completion, PADI is on a digital product mission. PADI has always been a world-class leader in diver education and has always been committed to creating the best diver training materials in the world and delivering them to the global network of PADI Dive Centers, Resorts and Professionals. PADI Members have always offered the world’s most sought-after diver certifications and have always enabled people to explore our water planet confidently and competently. So what is new? This has just become significantly easier. PADI is rolling out some major updates to the (newly named) eLearning Environment.

Today, PADI Members send a code from the online processing center to their students to allow those users to access eLearning products. Users then get an email with a link to access the product and an option to choose communication emails in a language of their choice. None of these steps have changed.

But now, when users click the link in that email, they are then taken to a freshly designed page where they create accounts to access their digital products. (If they already have an account, they simply use their login credentials to access their new materials.) The speed and efficiency of the login and sign up processes has been significantly improved too.

The new environment is clean and uncluttered. There’s a menu bar across the top, which makes it nice and simple for users to find their way. It’s easy to access PADI.com (by clicking either the logo or the PADI.com item in the menu bar). It’s easy to change languages. There’s a help option where users can find the number to call (or click a link to send an email directly to) the PADI office that supports them. There’s also the ever-popular forgotten password option where users can enter their account email and get a link to reset their passwords. Information icons provide additional information should users need it. It’s a clean simple interface and it’s difficult to get confused.

Once users sign in, they have the option to confirm or change their address. Now the icon in the top left changes from PADI to PADI eLearning®, confirming users are in the eLearningÔ Environment where all their courses reside. (A My Courses subhead confirms this). A simple, clean, panel identifies each course. Users can either click on the panel image or the View Courses box to access everything in their certification paks. All this content is clearly listed and seamlessly accessible, with user-friendly links and, one of the big improvements is that there is now only one single login to access the eLearning environment.

In their eLearning materials, users can see all the components in their certification paks: the tablet product, the low-resolution manual, the eRDPMLÔ and the eTraining Dive Log complete with a link straight to ScubaEarth where that log lives (instead of having to login yet again for ScubaEarth). Obviously, the components vary with the course.

The bottom line is that it’s a much cleaner, more organized, user environment. The menu bar follows users wherever they go, so they always have those options. Things just got a lot easier for eLearners. There’s a lot more in store, expect other features to roll out regularly

Every quarter The Undersea Journal is filled with stories and articles that help you stay informed and inspired as a PADI Professional. In addition to choosing a printed magazine there are several digital reading options for this useful publication:

1. Using the PADI Library App (Apple App Store | Play):

  • From your mobile device, open your Library in your PADI Library App, download and view.
  • On your computer, select Certification Paks from the Log In tab at the top of padi.com. From there you’ll be able to view the magazine in the Online Manuals portal.

2. Via the Zinio app on your computer or mobile device.

3. As a PDF on the PADI Pros’ Site. Log on to the Pros’ Site and click on the References tab. You can download the entire magazine or choose to download it in sections.

Each quarter, the latest edition of the publication will be added to the PADI Library.
